Sadly, the ball is eventually dropped with a lacklustre final reel, which is just way too predictable and not frightening enough to work as well as it really should. Once the story segues into the trapped-in-a-single-location scenario, the tension ups nicely, with some meaty scares and a rarely-seen beastie that's all the more realistic for being kept off-screen for the most part. The characters are well-drawn, too, with nice roles for the familiar faces (Sam Worthington, Radha Mitchell and John Jarratt). The last film along these lines that I watched was the excellent THE REEF, about sharks, and ROGUE is nowhere near as good as that film, but as it stands it's a hell of a lot better than the usual killer crocodile movies made by the likes of the SyFy Channel and other B-movie directors (Tobe Hooper, perchance?).įor starters, it has a decent set-up nice and slow, building up the atmosphere, and making great use of Australia's barren landscapes to build the tension.

The beginning is well developed and tense, but in a certain moment the story becomes unrealistic and corny with a silly conclusion. 'Rogue' is a light version of the tense, realistic and dramatic 'Black Water', which is based on a true event. However, the high tide forces the group to move, and the American journalist Pete McKell (Michael Vartan) has an idea to hold the killer croc while the group swims to the other side of the river. They are attacked by a huge crocodile, the boat sinks and the hysterical group is trapped in a small muddy island stalked by the crocodile.

While Kate's former husband, who also works on the river, makes a pest of himself in the early stages of the voyage, the travelers soon find they have more to worry about when their craft is attacked by a massive 25-foot crocodile, who is just clever enough to know how to trap its prey before enjoying them for dinner. Pete soon finds he's roughing it in the Aussie wilds with an eclectic variety of travelers, including Russell (John Jarratt), who is dealing with the death of his wife Simon (Stephen Curry), a tactless amateur photographer and Allen (Geoff Morrell), a member of the British upper crust making the trip with his ailing spouse (Heather Mitchell) and their rambunctious daughter (Mia Wasikowska). Pete signs up for a cruise along a river that's home to a large crocodile population, with tough but pretty Kate Ryan (Radha Mitchell) serving as guide. Pete McKell (Michael Vartan) is a writer for an American travel magazine who has been assigned to write a story about vacationing in rugged Northern Australia. A handful of tourists looking for adventure get more than they bargained for when they cross paths with a massive man-eating beast in this thriller.
